Grizzly 700 - Valve Adjustment
by nyroc, 2007-05-19
Tools 22mm socket, 8mm socket, 4mm allen, 14mm allen (or double nut bolt), screw drivers, feeler guages, 10mm socket or open end wrench.
With engine at room temperature:
Remove seat, tank panel, left side panel, left front fender, left footrest, air filtr box, fast idle plunger unit, intake tappet cover, exhaust tappet cover, camshaft sprocket cover, spark plug, timing mark plug (left case cover, 2:00 position), crankshaft access plug (left cover).
Set engine to TDC Firing:
Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise. When the piston is at the top dead center
(TDC) on the compression stroke, align the I mark on the magneto rotor with the stationary pointer on the magneto cover. Look at the camshaft. The I mark on the camshaft sprocket must be aligned with the stationary pointer on the cylinder head or the engine is at TDC intake. If the engine is at TDC intake, rotate the crankshaft one full turn (aligning the marks).
Adjust Valve clearance (cold)
Intake valve 0.09 ~ 0.13 mm (0.0035 ~ 0.0051 in)
Exhaust valve 0.16 ~ 0.20 mm (0.0063 ~ 0.0079 in)
I didn't have to adjust mine, they checked OK at 340 miles. If you are loosening yours very far, you are doing this wrong and probably are not on TDC firing. See the general tips on TDC.
Put parts back on
Use a new o-ring on the valve covers and cam cover. Torque cover bolts to 10 Nm (1.0 m-kg, 7.2 ft-lb)
Nyroc notes: If you know what you are doing, you don't need to remove the cam cover. You can tell which TDC position is firing because the valves have clearance (TDC intake always has some valve lift). I got the 14mm allen head wrench at Harbor freight, but the first time I did this I was able to use the nut on bolt method. The air cleaner removave requires a 4mm extra long allen wrench or something thin with reach like a 1/4 drive sockect extension. Good luck with that too.
